NORTH BAY – Saving Camp Caritou has turned into a big girl fight. The Friends of Camp Caritou have been raising funds to do battle with the Girl Guides of Canada, Ontario Council. Since the reorganization of Girl Guides of Ontario in 2007, members of the Ontario council made the decision to sell half of the camps, including Camp Caritou, for which the local girls and guiders paid off the mortgage through years of fundraising. “The camp is just sitting there, boarded up and empty,” said Cindy Brownlee, president of Friends of Camp Caritou. “The last 50 years we have done so much to improve the camp,” said Brownlee. “We have built outhouses, a picnic shelter, and a winterized lodge that sleeps 30.”

The camp also provided camping for Sparks, Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders, Rangers, Guiders and hosted the occasional family reunion or community group. Without the camp, the guides are paying to use provincial parks and holding sleepovers in church basements. “It’s really
not the same,” said Sandra Brownlee, a guide. “I had been going to Camp Caritou since I was five years old, twice a year. Since it
closed it has been really different.”

Cindy says that local members were not included in the decision and that she has requested information from Girl Guides of Canada and the Ontario council about the restructuring of Girl Guides but has been unsuccessful in receiving any answers.

On Sept. 10, the friends held a massive garage sale on Gormanville Road, selling t-shirts, and memberships, the funds raised will go towards paying lawyer fees and for awareness initiatives.
