Song

We have a song!  The tune is from The Mary Ellen Carter – with apologies to Stan Rogers.

Original words and tune can be viewed at:  http://www.chivalry.com/cantaria/lyrics/mary-ellen-carter.html

Rise Again

It came down last November like an early winter snow,

That half of our Girl Guide Camps were told they had to go.

“You’re just too small, don’t need you all, besides you’re just too poor,

And no one wants to go there any more.”

“What’s this?” we said, “It cannot be, for we’ve been keeping track,

And many you have mentioned have been running in the black.

What happened to the thirty grand that we had set aside,

For the benefit of all our local Guides?”

Well the Council wrote them off, not a nickel would they spend,

“They gave fifty years of service, girls, then met their sorry end,

The only way that we can pay the rising debt we’ve got

Is to sell you out or watch you go to rot.”

We talked of it all winter, some days from sun to sun,

They’re worth some several million, when all is said and done.

Amid the shout to clear them out and truck off what remains

Let Ontario’s Girl Guide Camps rise again!

Chorus:

Rise again, rise again,

That their names not be lost through decisions of shame,

All those who love them best will be with them till the end

To see Ontario’s Girl Guide Camps rise again!

Remember Camp Dahinda with the chirruping of frogs,

And lowly Peco Dah Quah in the early morning fog.

There’s Butler Lake and Camp Ashwene, in the true north strong and free:

Just please leave them alone and let them be.

We’ve got a stake in Polly Lake, where else is there to go?

There was a place for Camp Aneesh in the Guiding that we know,

And most of you know Caritou, Pineridge and Camp Corwhin,

Are waiting for Guides to come again.

And then there is Tewateno, still hoping for their lodge,

I saw a goose at Camp Waupoos, and the sunrise at Mille Roches,

Klahanie and Keewaydin, Kiawa and Pax Glen,

Ontario Girl Guide Camps:  rise again!

Chorus:

Rise again, rise again,

That their names not be lost through decisions of shame,

All those who love them best will be with them till the end

To see Ontario’s Girl Guide Camps rise again!

We cannot leave them there, you see, to crumble into dust.

To those who think the bottom line is all there is to trust:

If you can’t find a better way then you should step aside,

For the benefit of every future Guide.

And you, whom Transformation has dealt the final blow,

With smiling women lying to you everywhere you go,

Turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain:

Make Ontario’s Girl Guide Camps rise again!

Chorus:

Rise again, rise again,

Though our hearts may be broken, our Guiding at an end,

No matter what you’ve lost, be it a home, a camp, a friend,

Let’s make Ontario’s Girl Guide Camps rise again!

Repeat last Chorus
