Northern lights and stars in the inky black of night. Girls’ voices echoing across Gillies Lake. Beaver paths and the call of loons.

For decades that was the way of life for Girl Guides at Camp Ashwene near New Liskeard.

“It’s breathtaking,” says Gayle McNaughton, Camp Ashwene’s coordinator. “A huge, wonderful experience.”

Now, it’s come to an end.

The Ontario Council of Girl Guides is losing money and will close nearly half of its 33 camps Dec. 31 — just as celebrations begin marking 100 years of Guiding in Canada…
