Girl Guides Protest to Stop The Sale of Their Camp

Thursday, April 15, 2010

Goderich/Bayfield, by Dianne Colgan

Supporters of the Goderich and Bayfield Girl Guides are hoping to keep a part of their history open.

They’re protesting the closing of their beloved Camp Klahanie on Black’s Point Road.

Guide Leader Melody Faloner-Pounder says they received the property from John Hindmarsh before he died, and it was specifically for the Girl Guides in Bayfield and Goderich to use and run.

Falconer-Pounder says in 2007, Girl Guides of Canada took over the camp and said they wouldn’t close it.

This past November, Falconer-Pounder said they were told by a simple form letter that their camp was closed and would be selling off the property.

She says the Girl Guides are sending a consultant to the area today and she wants to have parents, Central Huron Council and girl guides past and present there to protest the closing.

Along with Camp Klahanie, 15 other Girl Guide camps have been closed and will shortly be sold off to help diminish their deficit.
